Hans Bischoffshausen was born in 1927, in Feld am See/Kärnten, Austria. An encounter with the work of Lucio Fontana, the great Italian champion, led Hans to an artistic turn. Prior to their meeting, Hans Bischoffshausen's work was dark and a material slaughter in asphalt, ashes, varnish and tin. After, it was bright, often white and yet unfathomable. Hans and Lucio held several joint exhibitions and became lifelong friends. In 1959, Hans and his family moved to Paris, then the capital of the avant-garde. They lived in extremely poor conditions in a cold, ugly house. By now, Hans belonged to the movement of ZERO artists. This group felt the border between image and sculpture should be reduced, that instead it should suggest movement, the color - the forming language - should be radically reduced. ZERO soon spread worldwide. From 1961 onward, many exhibited Hans Bischoffshausen's work; Yves Klein in Paris, Piero Manzoni in Italy, Antoni Tapies in Spain, and others.
